One-on-One Mentoring

For adolescents and young adults in Portland, OR.

Does your young loved one have Mental Health symptoms that get in the way of their daily functioning? Do they lack the coping skills to deal with their stress? Do they struggle with school, relationships, or daily functioning?

Mentoring can help

Supportive, inspiring, engaging mentoring can be the missing piece in a young persons treatment plan. We work with young people (and their existing providers) to help youth meet their individualized goals. We provide holistic, evidence-based treatments that target their unique symptoms and include hands-on-guidance in implementing treatment techniques and skills. Whether the transition is from a treatment program back home, or from home to independent living, our mission is to make that transition rock solid.

Customized

We meet with parents and existing providers to assess what the young person needs most from mentoring. Support can range from one to eight hours per week. Each treatment plan is customized to the individual. Though licensed to do psychotherapy, we focus on life skill coaching.

Young people need to be shown, not told, how to make changes.

We show youth how to add structure, activity, and healthy routines to their lives. Youth need someone who can relate to them, but who also challenges their beliefs and behaviors that hold them back. They need someone who understands mental health and addiction and can be a practical guide in managing those symptoms and triggers. Coaching life skills in the moment, such as managing frustration while searching for an apartment, is more effective than discussing coping skills when the young person isn’t actually feeling stressed. Rapport through the shared experience of a mentoring relationship will help your child be more open to different perspectives.

Geared for “Generation Z”

Some young people actively resist therapists, and for good reason. Young people don’t connect with each other by asking multiple personal questions while sitting face-to-face in an office. They may share vulnerable details after connecting in a less threatening manner, such as a hike or urban adventure, details they would not have shared in an office setting.

Young people often need more time to feel comfortable.

Often youth in Generation Z need no help with technology, but are not prepared for the “real world.” We coach young people how to organize, make decisions, and take concrete actions. We can help youth with practical life tasks: registering for classes, resume writing, job or apartment hunting, organizing and making decisions, making goals and taking action, exercising, cooking, and building healthy habits. We do not meet in an office because we find that meeting in coffee shops, parks, trails, and campuses helps build confidence and independent living skills.

Healthy & Holistic Habits

Some young people take to hobbies and interests easily. Others may get stuck and unsure what they like or even what options there are in the world. Others let depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance abuse take the wheel of their lives. In the same way that an older sibling or cousin can inspire a young person, Granite Bridges can help young people find relevant and constructive ways to spend their time while gaining experience for their future. We focus on physical, mental, and emotional health from a holistic perspective. The body, brain, and emotions are all connected; when one is out of balance, the others suffer too. It takes lived experience to know that having balanced health in all areas will help us cope with life better. Telling youth is one thing, but exercising or adventuring with them can concretely show the benefits healthy living can provide.

Youth is the time to find healthy passions to explore and enjoy rather than fall into easy, passive, and harmful habits.

Research is clear that social media, drugs, and other “easy” distractions decreases life satisfaction and self-esteem while increasing depression and anxiety. As adults with many artistic, musical, physical, and intellectual passions, we can inspire youth to stay active, find and pursue their interests, and broaden their horizons.
